Outlander "The Reckoning" Review

5/21/2015

by Cookie N Screen

Outlander's mid season finale was certainly a shocker - especially considering that Claire is gradually assimilating to life in 1700s Scotland where her resolve is tested repeatedly. Though her running departure to the stones (which, talking about it now took her a stupidly long time) helped snap her out of the real life hunky Highlander fantasy to find her way back to Frank, with every day she spends in the past, the more she wants to stay there. Who could blame her really? But as Outlander continues to romp over the moors and heaths, will it hold this kinetic energy it has acquired? Or will it start to tumble down? This week's episode, The Reckoning, is a little bit of an overstated title for what the episode actually is.

Bring Back... The Class

Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Lizzy Caplan are names that you probably recognise nowadays. The latter perhaps not so much because you all know her as Janice from Mean Girls and less for things she is doing today (appearing alongside Martin Sheen in Masters of Sex.) Jesse Tyler Ferguson is better known today as one of half of the best couple on television; Mitchell and Cam from Modern Family. I talk about these two because they are now possibly the better known characters from short lived comedy series The Class and I say, let’s bring it back right now!

Where Did All The Good TV Shows Go?

5/17/2015

Brace yourselves, TV show cancellation seasons is in full force. More brutal than a scene of Game of Thrones (which is staying so no worries there,) this time is fateful for the avid small screen lover who has invested so much into series and shows. As we grab our friends in woe, our stomachs coiled with fright as another studio executor, I mean executive, decides which shows are ill-fitting for our further consumption, it’s a hard and tentative few days of announcements as heads roll.

But why does it feel that this year, shows barely in fruition seem to be taking the chop like The Viking’s sacrificial virgins (which is another show that is staying)? Have we lost faith in originality?

Outlander "Both Sides Now" Review

5/14/2015

The interesting thing that hasn’t been quite addressed is the time travel aspect of Claire’s journey. Sure, we’ve dealt with the clash of personalities as she struggles to come to terms with the layout of Scotland in the 1700s. But we’ve never really sat down and thought, “Oh yeah, she’s gone back in time. Erm, how?” And more importantly, we’ve completely forgotten about Frank. The reason this is interesting is that, back in her post-war life, Frank is looking for his wife. Does this mean they are going sideways in time, just hundreds of years between them? Why? Couldn’t the stones just take her back to the day she left? Then Frank needn’t look for her at all.

Growing up in a British household during the nineties and early noughties means gathering around the television and watching some right proper English television shows. From The Bill to Casualty, Heartbeat to Bad Girls, the family used to gather around and watch some of the greatest shows, revelling in the spectacular action, heartfelt emotion and drama. Oh, so much drama. On the epic list of incredible series that we’d gather round as a family, enjoying the high octane thrills and chills, then 2002's Spooks (which premieres on May 13th) was definitely one of the best. As Spooks: The Greater Good lands in cinemas today, starring Kit Harrington, let’s visit the phenomenal television series.

Outlander "The Wedding" Review

5/7/2015

The tension between Jamie and Claire has been palpable since she first climbed his steed and tended to his wounds. Whilst the married woman struggled with the obvious tension, Jamie was clearly smitten with the British Sassenach. It seems as though we’ve been waiting for them to launch off into illicitness and place Claire in turmoil due to her past life colliding with that of her future, adding a new intriguing level to the story. In essence, if she found her way back to the stones, she could get back home and recant the wild tale to her husband Frank, sleeping it off in as a bad dream.

Well, she cannot do that anymore.

Gotham "All Happy Families Are Alike" Review

Gotham Season One Finale.

Wow, I’ve never heard a phrase that has given me such undeniable relief as I have. Especially with the word, “finale.” After all, Gotham has been a show filled with lacklustre disappointing plots, with the writers throwing Batman canon at us like monkeys throwing faeces and it smacked us in the face with a strong whiff of shit. The series revolved around the same concept peddled out repeatedly as though audiences were too dumb to notice that they were not only ripping off every crime drama and the original comic but they were spinning around like children in the garden going “ooo Batman” at every turn. So yes, instead of wasting my Monday evenings preparing my brain to not fall into a Gotham induced coma because of how utterly tedious the show was, we get a bit of a break until series two.

Outlander "The Garrison Commander" Review (Spoilers!)

4/30/2015

Picture

The on-going theme in Outlander is the rivalry between Scotland and England for very obvious reasons. Set in the 1700s, the show surrounds the invasions and subsequent wars that go much further than a painted Mel Gibson screaming about freedom as his knackers blow in the wind. I’m not going to protest and shout as though I know everything about the rich tapestry of this land (though, I must urge you that I should, and so should you,) but I do believe that Outlander takes a rather fenced view - like the team are sitting on Hadrian’s Wall failing to pick sides. Because in Outlander, whilst everyone knows that Scotland is the least grotty of the scrotum sacks, both parties do a lot of terrible things here.
