Game of Thrones is always on people’s lips. Whether they’re talking about how good it is, the shocking moments that have happened, or even debating about the books and the show, everyone is always talking about it. Unfortunately, it’s not always for a good reason. Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken is easily the worst episode of the season so far, and you all know why. But let’s get through the positives first before we discuss....That.

In a wondrous announcement last Friday, the King of surreal filmmaking, David Lynch, is returning to helm the third season of cult television series Twin Peaks.

It's that time of year again where many of our favourite US shows are coming to a close, some leaving us desperate for more, and others wondering why we bothered. Arrow faced off against Ra's Al Ghul and the League of Assassins, Frank Underwood had a turbulent first year in the White House, Gotham stumbled clumsily through contrived back-stories and Community has swung from one extreme to the other. But looking forward, what do we have on the fall (autumn to us Brits) horizon? Whilst you're here, why not check out our coverage of CW's Legends of Tomorrow and ABC's The Muppets?

There’s cruelty and then there’s what the BBC just did to its Atlantis viewers with “The Queen Must Die”. When its cancellation was announced a few months back, we knew that there were going to be a fair few loose ends left behind for Tumblr fangirls to resolve. But leaving it like that? Essentially trailing a season that is never going to hit our screens? That’s just taunting us. We’ll never get to see the hunt for the Golden Fleece, or find out if Orpheus rescues Eurydice from Hades, or discover who Jason chooses in his love triangle. Also, how the hell was a FLEECE (traditionally shorn from a woolly animal) woven?

Brace yourselves, TV show cancellation seasons is in full force. More brutal than a scene of Game of Thrones (which is staying so no worries there,) this time is fateful for the avid small screen lover who has invested so much into series and shows. As we grab our friends in woe, our stomachs coiled with fright as another studio executor, I mean executive, decides which shows are ill-fitting for our further consumption, it’s a hard and tentative few days of announcements as heads roll. But why does it feel that this year, shows barely in fruition seem to be taking the chop like The Viking’s sacrificial virgins (which is another show that is staying)? Have we lost faith in originality?

Speakers Zac Nicholson - The Honourable Woman Luke Menges - Life and Death Row The session minimally discussed lighting, and instead focused on the similarity and differences between crafting cinematography for fiction films and for non-fiction, specifically documentaries. The presenter used a quote to describe the central theme of the discussion perfectly. Quoting Alfred Hitchcock, he said ‘in Feature Film, the Director is God. In documentaries, God is the Director.’ This seemed to be the direction of the discussion, with Zac speaking from a fiction perspective and Luke representing non-fiction.

Frank Underwood is spiralling out of control. The President and his wife, are being attacked from all sides and even their façade of a marriage seems to be a breaking point. In this penultimate episode of Season Three, it becomes apparent how much Frank needs Claire. Compared to last week where we were shown exactly how much Claire needs him, this time it's a role reversal. Frank is the face of his campaign, yet Claire is the all-important voice giving the people of America hope. Hope that Claire, it seems, will no longer provide for her husband’s benefit.

Last week was a low point for Supernatural. While the episode was basically sound, Charlie’s death was a waste. Nevertheless, this week brings another episode and Dean’s going off the deep end thanks to previous events. Can’t blame him, really. Charlie didn’t need to die, but at least someone’s as angry about it as the audience.

Well we’ve reached the end of Arrow’s third series and have just one episode left of Flash’s first and ultimately what we have learned is that DC definitely are kings of the small screen. Both shows offer great story writing and dynamic characters in a shared universe where both casts can show up in each other’s worlds at any time. Both also have great secondary characters, so great that DC’s Legends of Tomorrow promises to bring the best of both shows and cram them into one, and as the first reveal trailer suggests it is going to be on an epic scale.

This week sees Jane’s life get even more complicated, an impressive feat considering she was accidentally artificially inseminated with her boss’ sperm only a few episodes ago. Now she’s having sexual fantasies about said boss, Rafael, and comes clean about them to her fiancé in front of her priest during marriage counselling in order to prepare for their upcoming marriage. It shouldn’t work, but it does. |
