Doctor Who: Top 3 Seventh Doctor Stories

3/28/2013

Picture
By Christian Kern

The seventh Doctor was portrayed by Sylvester McCoy, an actor no one wanted to look at originally but who ended up nailing the part for years to come. Although his television reign was short lived, McCoy held the position for many years, his likeness appearing throughout the extended universe novels before handing over the keys to the TARDIS to Paul McGann in 1996.  The 7th Doctor was mysterious, cunning and most of all manipulative. He was a man with a plan and a mission.

“There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea is asleep and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there’s danger, somewhere there’s injustice, and somewhere else the tea is getting cold. Come on, Ace, we’ve got work to do.”

Doctor Who: Top 3 Sixth Doctor Stories

Brash, loud (both vocally and visually), with a heart full of gold, Colin Baker’s tenure as the Doctor was short lived but loved by many. A far darker character than most of his predecessors, the 6th Doctor began his reign by trying to kill his companion (the woman he’d just sacrificed his previous life to save) and imposing exile upon himself for his actions. Craziness aside (mostly), the Doctor went on to save the Earth from the Cybermen, avert an intergalactic war, came face to face with his second incarnation and be put on trial by his own people… again. These are my personal top 3 6th Doctor adventures.

“I shall beat it into submission... with my charm.”

Spaced - Retrospective

I’ll bet any money that at least 90% of the people reading this have seen Shaun of the Dead. I’ll bet any money that at least 80% of them have seen Hot Fuzz. And I’ll bet any money that 100% of those who have seen them loved them.

Yes, nowadays, Shaun and Fuzz are considered modern classics. What’s not to love? The excellent writing, the funny performances, the indescribably funny gags… But it didn’t start here. Oh no, before they were movie stars, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, along with director Edgar Wright, were famous for something else entirely...

Game of Thrones Season 3: The Court of the Iron Throne Predictions (Spoilers)

3/27/2013

Picture
By Jamie Kennett

After one king comes the other. We’ve issued a forecast for the King in the North, but what about the one on the Iron Throne? Joffrey Baratheon managed to escape the tumult of the Battle of the Blackwater by the skin of his teeth, and hid in the Red Keep right up until his grandfather rode in to claim the battle for the Throne. He survived, but that’s not to say many people wanted him to. There are only a handful of people in the whole on the Seven Kingdoms that would rather Joffrey remain on the throne, so news of Stannis’ defeat was not just disappointing for him, and his people back at Dragonstone. What do we think is in store for Joff and his court in King’s Landing now that some peace and stability has been restored to the land?

Doctor Who: Top 3 Fifth Doctor Stories

Calm, Collected, an ancient head on a young mans body, the 5th Doctor, played beautifully by Peter Davison, was the perfect follow up to the borderline insanity of Tom Baker. Sporting an equally out of place costume (and a decorative vegetable), the 5th Doctor faced some tough challenges, struggling through a failing regeneration, fending off the newly rejuvenated Master, loosing a companion and sacrificing his life to save another. Here are my personal top 3 5th Doctor adventures.

“Oh, marvellous. You're going to kill me. What a finely tuned response to the situation.”

Game of Thrones Season 3: The Kingdom in the North Predictions (Spoilers)

3/27/2013

Picture
By Jamie Kennett

So, we’ve had our fair share of the Lannisters, next I’m taking a look at all those fine lords, ladies and lowborns that dwell in and around the Kingdom of the North; the Starks, Tullys, Greyjoys, and anyone in-between. By the end of the last season, it all seemed to be looking up for Winterfell and Riverrun; they were well on their way to achieving the independence they so desired, and Robb Stark was becoming increasingly close to ridding the Riverlands of the likes of Tywin Lannister and his host of malicious lion-crested cronies. However, a broken deal with the small-yet-powerful House Frey could spell trouble in the near future...

Doctor Who: Top 3 Fourth Doctor Stories

“What’s the point in being grown up if you can’t be childish sometimes?”

The fourth doctor, portrayed by Tom Baker was certainly lived up to his statement. He could be serious, he could be violent but he took the eccentricity of Patrick Troughton and escalated it!

(Took Troughton’s Jelly Babies too!)

Sly, wise, intelligent and with wit beyond measure, the third Doctor as portrayed by Jon Pertwee was stranded on Earth for most of his incarnation. But he put his time to good use, bringing the thrills of the universe home to earth not only saved the show money, but added realism too! Here are my top 3 third Doctor adventures…

Detestable TV - The X-Factor

Saturday night family television has evolved a lot since I was a child. Back then Big Brother was a ‘social experiment’ and not a springboard for Z list celebrities, and Fame Academy was competing with Pop Idol for the most heart warming contestant, (for anyone whose interested Lemar and Will Young are still battling for this title).

The Walking Dead - This Sorrowful Life (Spoilers)

3/26/2013

Picture
By Christian Kern

Episode 15 of The Walking Dead, This Sorrow Life, opens with Rick, Herschel and Daryl discussing their next play. Rick has given in and believes that sacrificing Michonne to the Governor is his only move. Even though both Herschel and Daryl feel this isn’t the group and how they operate, they side with Rick. However Rick needs one more onboard so he approaches Merle, asking him why he does what he does. Merle answers that he has no idea what has shaped him, however he sees straight through the sheriff and calls Rick on his mask of bullshit, telling him he hasn’t the guts or the spine for what he intends to do next.
