I have no idea what is happening with television shows at the moment. Because it feels like we’ve all hit this end of year slump. It could be that the audience, such as myself, are just so bored with generally vapid storylines being dragged over several episodes as we look towards Christmas and the added stress that comes with that. It could be that writers are over abundant with ideas and lack the attention span to follow them through, ending them because no one really gives a shit about exploring them without much depths. With American Horror Story, they’d rather provoke with “freakish” characters than actually go into intense examination. Blood Bath could be amazing but it’s more like a watery grave for the show.
Not to sound like a broken record but there is a reason Dandy Mott is one of the more enjoyable characters. It is possible where the rest of the writing is going, to make him as pantomime and psychopathic all at once. He, and his background, are unravelling nicely and his chewy character is pushed forward into bloodiness – it’s rather fun to watch with just this under-vein of terror. After all, nobody loves a villain more when they don’t have some tragic backstory. Incidentally, we get to explore Dandy’s a little bit more and we get to see how much of a brat and how many he had killed. He is just the best and if that makes me a little psychotic then so be it.
The problem with Freak Show is that it held a lot of promise but also a lot of laziness as the writers leaned more on their comfortable tropes then give us genuine characters we care about. It’s the way they handle their characters here, with the exception of Dandy, that just rottens what could be a juicy series.
