Almost Human "Unbound" (Spoilers!)

These are the episodes that make me pause and wonder what on earth went on behind the scenes to throw the episode order out of whack so very badly. Such is the pain of a fan.

This week’s episode, features Gina Carano, as a killer robot Danica and John Larroquette as the creator of the DRN series, Dr Nigel Vaughn.

In a truly creepy fashion, a faceless robot murders a woman in order to be shot down and taken into the police evidence lock-up where the robot retrieves Danica’s head and places it on its body. How it does that without a head in the first place, I’m not clear about, but it makes perfect sense in this world. Danica escapes, wreaking havoc as she kills her way through the city on the search for something. Carano plays an emotionless killer robot with all the skill of… I don’t know, a UFC fighter? She was once touted as a replacement female action hero for all those silly actresses that don’t look like female action heroes, though presumably they can still, you know, act. Still not sure what Carano’s acting style is in this, other than emotionless killer robot.

Anyway, our odd couple find that she’s paid Nigel Vaughn a visit, her creator and Dorian’s too. His wealth and company was destroyed by the DRNs going crazy and then crushed to ash when their replacement, Danica, went crazy for three days killing people. So Vaughn has issues with her. He resolves to help them capture her and Larroquette provides an earnestness to Vaughn that makes him believable.

Until he isn’t and revealed to be the person behind Danica’s current rampage. He’s out to retrieve the 500 chips of synthetic souls held by the cops when his lab equipment and content were confiscated. Yup, he wants to create an army.

Now here, where things get lazy. Or crazy. Not sure yet. There’s been an underlying story through the series about the Insyndicate gang, and Kennex’s desire to bring them down. Given his girlfriend was part of it, and he was in a coma for 17 months because of them, you’d think they’d refer to the gang a little more often, but the show hasn’t. Instead, in one episode, the gang is brought back, and another question the show has played heavily on – what is in their evidence lock-up that the gang wants so desperately that they’ll attack the precinct for it – is answered. Danica. She is a blunt instrument in essence, but she caught the cops’ attention and led them to Vaughn. He in turn preyed on their desperation for help and get them to retrieve the chips they confiscated from his lab. At the same time, Danica robbed another lab and grabbed another set of chips for Vaughn.

Does that mean Vaughn is in league with Insyndicate? Probably. But that isn’t delved into at all during the episode. I’m assuming it’s going to magically appear in another episode.

Then there’s The Wall. It surrounds the city. Why? No idea, it’s never been brought up before. Yup. Sighs.

What is interesting though is that Vaughn brings up that there’s no difference between the synthetic souls that Dorian and Danica have. So what does that mean given that she went all crazy robot on everyone? Perhaps it’s the new underlying question that’s going to drive Dorian?

I just hope the show gets a second season to answer that.
