We are quickly approaching the end of this season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and in some places it has been so hard to keep up. So much has happened, so many plot twists, so many action sequences, emotional moments and kick-ass story lines. We come to this episode being unable to tell where everyone's allegiances lie. The tension is palpable as the episode builds to a thrilling climax.
One of the most important parts of this week’s episode is the pinnacle of Simmon’s transformation from a science nerd who spent most of her time in the lab to a kick-ass and ruthless agent who would do anything to protect her friends. She has grown so much more than anyone ever thought she would. She is braver, more fierce, capable of handling herself and not afraid to confront her fears and the people that are a threat to her and her friends. Whilst all of the characters in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have had brilliant character development, this week sees Simmons at her peak, after coming through so much and struggling internally with decisions she has made, she is stronger and even perhaps now one of the most dangerous characters on the show.
There is one slight negative to the episode; Coulson's revelation to Gonzalez over Nick Fury faking his death feels as though it is more an aside as opposed to a major revelation. The veil of secrecy that hung over the events of Winter Soldier suggests that a little more care could have been taken with the reveal.
Overall it was a good episode filled with brilliant action, great character development and as usual the special effects and CGI were awesome. Plus we get a good teaser for next week’s episode as Reina predicts what is going to happen in Age of Ultron. It will be interesting to see how next week’s episode will fit into the film's narrative.
