Well, that was a dramatic end to the second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. What an absolutely amazing season it has been. I could try and write a synopsis for all of the madness that has occurred over the past 22 episodes, but that would be boring. Plus that isn’t the point of this article. Let’s just say; The two part season finale is pretty much the definition of this season. Action fuelled, arse-kicking awesomeness!
Despite this, the episode still contained plenty of surprises. Jiaying's actions to protect her people, Skye's internal struggles and more all hold you in their grip as the plot gets woven so intricately around these people.
There were many brilliant moments throughout, Skye showed off she had come under May's tutelage with a fantastic fight. The scenes with Bobbi, Ward and Agent 33 were utterly brilliant yet horrifying at times, with a very emotional upheaval acting as icing on top of the cake. One of the best moments of all, however, was when Skye's battle with an Inhuman that could duplicate herself. The editing was insane, cutting between each shot so sharply and so quickly, imitating Skye’s moves and portraying her as a ninja goddess. It was sublime.
Fitz and Simmons don't play a very big part in this episode, mostly due to the high-octane action of the finale placing their more passive roles in the background. They still play important roles within the story, as well as getting a few new story strands teased for the next season. Hopefully their roles next year will see even more development.
The acting was top notch, the plot was gripping and thoroughly entertaining, the effects and editing were incredible and the whole series has been one heck of a ride. You can come away from this finale feeling completely satisfied. Loose ends were tied, a strong conclusion was given and we are left hungry for more S.H.I.E.L.D. action.
