The film follows the star of a popular celebrity tabloid show called “Skylark Tonight” called Dave Skylark (played by James Franco) and his producer and friend Aaron Rapoport (played by Seth Rogen.) They discover that their show is really popular with the North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un and from that point, all hell breaks loose with the CIA trying to recruit the pair to kill the dictator.
Without beating around the bush, the trailer is trying way too hard to be hip and funny. I’ve got the horrible feeling the film will follow suit. This is especially apparent in the performance by James Franco. It’s clear that his character is supposed to be wild and not entirely intelligent but does that really have to translate as so obvious it’s obnoxious?
The film still stands a chance of being decent; after all, the trailer for The Drop seemed to portray a quite different film to what we actually ended up with. Other elements of the film may save itself with Franco as an unfortunate factor. Only the release of the film in cinemas will verify either way.
