There doesn’t seem to be a standout performance on this film too. Tommy Lee Jones doesn’t make the impact you’re hoping for, neither do any of the other actors and Hilary Swank, despite getting a great review from The Hollywood Reporter saying that she gives one of her best performances, doesn’t show that in this trailer and seems to make the same facial expression all the way through. When the trailer ended I was like “ Wait, that’s it?” The trailer didn’t give me that excitement to go see this film that I felt after seeing the trailers for Foxcatcher or The Imitation Game. I can see The Homesman getting a lot of sympathy nominations come the awards season all because of the recognition the film got at Cannes and because it has Oscar bait written all over it. But I’m not bothered about The Homesman and I doubt this will attract mainstream audiences into the cinema in the way I expect Foxcatcher to do.
As we approach awards season, more and more trailers for Oscar contenders are being released. But unlike Foxcatcher, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby and The Imitation Game, The Homesman doesn’t really seem to momentum behind it. It’s obvious from this recent trailer that the filmmakers want to showcase this film as an Oscar contender by having “Academy Award Winner” posted above Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank’s names and even have “Queen Oscar” herself Meryl Streep pop up in the trailer. But the problem this trailer has is that isn’t clear what direction they want to advertise this film as, is it an Oscar film, a western drama, or even a dramedy? There are moments where you could maybe have a funny line that don’t come, there isn’t any real emotion in the story and performances and it doesn’t feel much like a western apart from the look of the film. There doesn’t seem to be a standout performance on this film too.
