Ever since the first trailer of Jupiter Ascending landed before an innocuous movie I was watching, I have been wrapped up in its story. A true space epic that had no connotations or wailing fan-boys beforehand created by the twins who did The Matrix? Sold. There is haunting beauty of the galaxies, the evocative storyline and the massive battles, setting an impressive and exquisite tone. So why does it feel like I am the only one? Right, because it feels that the studios aren’t entirely trusting this one, hiding it away in February. Oh ye of little faith.
For those out of the loop, this Wachoski sci-fi epic sees Mila Kunis as Jupiter Jones, the supposed reincarnation of the owner of Earth, a princess if you will. However, the galaxy hierarchy sees a powerful family at the top of the chain angered by her rising as they believe that Earth is theirs. Cue lots of pouting, family issues and explosive space battles with the likes of Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, Sean Bean and Channing Tatum (part dog, apparently).
Ok so I may be entirely wrong for placing the blame in the hands of the studios. After all, the film was taken away to re-master it to the point that we can enjoy the exciting eloquence that this trailer is given us. But there is still a timid reaction to the film. This space romp could falter but the stunning quality of the visuals and the plot seems to all equate into this general feeling; “hell yeah.”
