This might seem a little weird, releasing five new clips from a film on the day it goes on general release in the UK, and a full week after its full release in the US, but that's what we have ourselves with The Judge. Perhaps an attempt to convince anyone who remains uncertain as to whether they wish to partake in the legal-based drama about a successful attorney, Hank (played by Robert Downey, Jr.), having to defend his estranged father, Joseph (played by Robert Duvall), on the charge of murder. Relationships that were uneasy before are now the only thing that can keep the family together under this new challenge of intense pressure.
If you do find yourself teetering on the decision, looking at cinema listings and trying to decide whether to spend your evening with familial discord or another of the week's releases, then perhaps these clips can help you choose.
There are various aspects of the film on display through these clips, like Hank's relationship with his brother Glen, played by Vincent D'Onofrio. It's a very brief moment, but says much about both brothers and how they have both led their lives, one leaving for personal reasons and the other staying for equally personal reasons. We also get to see what kind of Judge Joseph is, and indeed what kind of father he probably was to his children from those brief glances at Hank as he hides in a corner of the courtroom. And we most certainly get to see the kind of man and lawyer Hank has turned out to be: a success because he's good at defending the rich and guilty. Even with just these clips, there is enough to build what would seem to be an accurate portrait of this family.
The Judge is in theatres now, so feel free to go see it and you can also read I'm With Geek's review here.
