Russell is Brand by name, and Brand by business. He’s really getting out there politically at the minute. He released his book Revolution last year, his Trews News Youtube channel now has over a million subscribers and he’s even opening a café in Hoxton. He’s got a lot going on, and the trailer for his new movie seems to follow the same agenda. We need change, and we need it now.
The Emperor’s New Clothes looks like it’s going to be Russell using his full arsenal, as a comedian, a public figure and a political activist to highlight the blatant disparity in our current economic system. By using grim comparisons, Russell wants to make us realise the ridiculous inequality in the distribution of wealth. The one that got me was that it would now take 300 years for the average cleaner, cleaning the offices of his senior boss, to earn the same salary taken home by the same boss last year. They probably work twice as many hours as well.
Russell Brand will always be inseparable from what he creates. It’s often seen as his biggest flaw. People tend to attack him because of the ‘hypocrisy’ in the fact that he is successful, rich and yet pleading for better distribution in wealth. But I’ve always found Russell to be the first to hold his hands up and tell the truth. There’s an honesty in his character which is present in all his work. Only Russell could make a banker giggle whilst accusing him of being a jammy dodger to society.
I hope you are as excited about his new film as I am!
