Southpaw seems to be deeper than your average underdog movie. In the trailer, Gyllenhaal is presented as no stallion. He has huge anger issues, contemplates suicide and has to overcome the grief of losing his wife through his lack of control over his anger. He’s a man who has ‘taken way too many hits before he got up.’ Damaged goods both physically and mentally. The main battle seems to be in his head, and with his daughter who blames him for her Mothers’ death. He’s fighting to take back control of himself and his life.
Southpaw has a hugely talented cast, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker and 50 Cent. The movie was originally created with the intention of having Eminem to take the lead part, so it will have parallels with 8 Mile. Instead, we have Gyllenhaal taking the lead role and the new trailer teases a new song from the Rap God.
Southpaw looks to be a promising tale of loss and redemption. It’ll be coming to our screens July 31st.
