In the pantheon of animated hippo-like creatures, the Moomins... wait, are they hippos or what? What's going on there?... Never mind. Point is, the Moomins are a long-standing staple in the book, cartoon and comic strip world. They've been hand-drawn, 3D animated and captured through the art of felt-covered stop-motion and in their continued grasp for animated dominance, they are returning to cinemas in Moomins on the Riviera.
Adapted from the original comic strip by Tove Jansson, the film sees the family Moomin, along with Little My and Snorkmaiden, go on a hazardous sea voyage, which eventually brings them to the Riviera, where they take their rest amongst the upper echelons of society. Here they face a test greater than that of the sea, trying to stay together in the face of their new unfamiliar surroundings.
For those who grew up watching the old Moomin cartoons, it's kind of weird to hear them speaking in an accent that isn't dubbed American, but the charm of the Moomins looks to be fully intact and the animation looks superb. There are going to be a lot of people hoping this does well for the sake of their cherished nostalgia. Looks like UK audiences will find out one way or another come May this year.
