The film stars Sophia Myles and Ed Stoppard as the Marshall family. Somewhere in the recent past Mr Marshall has had a breakdown. The couple, with their young son, decide to start over by moving to an old isolated house. As per usual strange occurrences begin to happen as Mr Marshall begins to see things in the house. His hallucinations become more vivid as the houses dark past is uncovered.
Blackwood has a typical haunted house plot line. You can easily relate it to others such as Amityville or The Haunting. Winpenny talks of the benefits of filming in the UK with its abundance of isolated creepy houses and country landscapes. From the featurette the film displays some impressive visuals with all the bump in the night moments you would expect from a haunted house.
Despite a cast with great potential, that also includes the very talented Russell Tovey, this just feels too familiar. A typical and unoriginal looking haunted house horror.
The featurette also includes some unusual imagery of an owl creature and mask. As an Owl lover/enthusiast I must object to a film that would either soil or sodden the majestic owls good name.
Blackwood comes out on DVD 23rd of February
