It looks like O’Connell is starring up again (bad movie pun so let’s move past that.) In the debut feature by Yann Demange, 71 revolves around the Belfast riots in which British soldiers were deployed to calm the violence down between Catholics and Protestants at a tense line that merged the religions together. The problem is that no one wants them there, and as it escalates, young Green Beret Gary is accidentally abandoned in the city with gunmen on his trail.
This brand new clip from Studiocanal sums up exactly what is tantalising from the film. Showing Gary wounded and hiding, it conveys that desperation for life and survival that is ingrained in Gary’s training. Also able to levitate the fright under his despairing composure, O’Connell shows the layers of his talent and skill with this remarkable ferociousness unparalleled in his generation of thespians. ’71 seems like a glorious piece of work that you need to watch.
