Oh you were so close Kurt Johnstad, you were so close. There was a glimmer of a truly visceral and powerful story whilst you were talking about 300: Rise of An Empire but then you lost it. Look, everyone knows that the first film from Zack Synder, based on a graphic novel by Frank Millar, was pure style over substance. Many of us flocked to the cinemas for the vapid and weightless plot just to reveal in the blood, gore and abs. The reason it’s sequel was possibly tantalising might be because we wanted more blood, gore and abs. Maybe it's to see Lena Headley and Eva Green launching armies upon one another. But let’s not go around pretending that it was anything spiritual or emotional.
In this new behind the scenes featurette, Johnstad talks about the story and how Lena Headley’s character, Queen Gorgo, is overwhelmed by the death of her husband Gerard Butler (Leonias but it’s all the same). Talking that she has lost part of her, Johnstand argues that this weights the story with emotion. And then quickly dissolves into the terms “bad-asses” and “Lena Headley is cool” which don’t bode well for your film.
