Oh My Geed! Did You Know? is our daily burst of useless trivia for your lunchtime entertainment. Today - Rubies, sapphires, antibacterial doorknobs and toilet seats, and why Ronald McDonald was fired!
The original Ronald McDonald was fired in the sixties, because he was too fat! McDonald’s said in order to sell burgers, shakes and fries, clearly unhealthy foods, their mascot should be fit and otherwise healthy (unless you count his pale looks). The original actor of the infamous clown, Willard Scott eventually found work as a weatherman for NBC’s popular Today Show.
Speaking of Ronald McDonald, anyone seen what he was up to in Japan recently? No seriously… Someone please tell me what he is doing here?!

Look at them sparkle!
Here’s one for you? What are rubies and sapphires made of? If you said… “Well, ruby and sapphire, you idiot”, your WRONG! They are made of the same mineral, Corundum, a crystalline form of Aluminium Oxide. They can be practically any colour, anything red-orange is a ruby, every other colour is called a sapphire, so you can get green sapphires!
And finally, toilets...
In a recent study at Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham, they replaced taps, toilet seats and a push plate on an entrance door with exact replica copper versions. They were swabbed twice a day and examined under a microscope. It was found that they had 95% fewer germs on them than the fittings the hospital usually used. The study is hopefully going to produce a range of antibacterial doorknobs and toilet utensils, which could help stop the spread of disease in hospitals and around the home.
Same time tomorrow!
