Enough about history and preposition because your favourite team I’m With Geek headed over to Birmingham this weekend to scope the best moments, cosplays and vendors from MCM Comic Con. Here are some of the highlights Deputy Editors Graham and Cookie from this brilliant weekend.
When going to place like comic con, you may want to go see the celebrities there to get your stuff signed. In fact, that is one of the main draws of comic con; to finally meet one of your heroes. The big one this weekend, Paul McGann; a particular favourite of a certain film blogger. The question is is when do you go? Do you go straight away and get it out of the way or wait until it’s quieter? We did both. Cookie headed their first thing while Graham sauntered up as it was winding down and both with equal success (one got a hug and one got a photo.) McGann, who many know as the eighth Doctor and the narrator in Withnail & I, was truly a lovely man. Attentive to everyone he made sure that the younger of his fanbase weren’t nervous. For example, Cookie’s little sister said no words because she was too star struck to speak. Upon hearing this, he practically leapt over the table to give her a hug and a friendly kiss on the cheek. It’s safe to say that McGann was our highlight and has inched his way up the roster of I’m With Geek’s favourite people.
We also headed over to a couple of the panels to check out the latest gossip from television and film. First up were the girls from Sleep Hollow, Nicole Beharie, Katia Winter and Lyndie Greenwood. They enthusiastically talked about how much they loved being on the show, how important it is to be and even how weird it is acting with a golf ball on a stick (they’d CGI the monster later.) Although we did hang out for the panel, Graham got an exclusive press interview with the ladies and will have more on that later.
But the most enjoyable thing was the cosplays. Let’s just say a massive bravo to all who committed to their costumes. From the fez’ to the prosethtics, people who love shows, comics, games and cinema all bustled in as their beloved characters. Watching people live their passion, perform their roles and get it down to a tee. Add this to the countless tables selling merchandise, vintage film posters and more and MCM Comic Con is the place to be.
Here in Birmingham, people gather to celebrate their obsessions and the atmosphere is a fantastic one.
