In The Wings: The Tony Award Nominations

5/5/2014

The day has arrived for people like me. The 2014 Tony Award Nominations were announced last week by Lucy Liu and Jonathan Groff, and it’s going to be an extremely tight race, probably even tighter than any other type of award this year. Nominations range from a show about The French Revolution to a Disney show about a street rat, from Neil Patrick Harris to Bryan Cranston. The announcement wasn’t without some upset, however as it was noted that Michelle Williams, Denzel Washington and Daniel Radcliffe (again) were all snubbed for brilliant performances. However, despite these upsets, many are pleased.

The big ones are as following. Nominees for Best Play include Act One, All The Way and Casa Valentina.  Amongst the nominees for Best Musical are Aladdin, After Midnight and A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder. Nominated for Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre are Aladdin, The Bridges of Madison, and If/Then, amongst others. Best Revival of a Play nominees include the nominations of The Cripple of Inishmaan and The Glass Menagerie. Best Revival of a Musical nominees include Les Miserables and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, and Tony Shalhoub have all been nominated for Best Leading Actor in a Play, amongst several others.  Tyne Daly, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Cherry Jones, Audra McDonald, and Estelle Parsons are all nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Play. Among the nominees for both Best Leading Actor and Actress (Musical) are Ramin Karimloo, Neil Patrick Harris, Bryce Pinkham, Sutton Foster, Idina Menzel, and Kelly O’Hara.  Stephen Fry, Reed Birney,  Brian J. Smith, Ceelia Keenan-Bolger, Mare Winningham and Anika Noni Rose are included with the nominees for Best Supporting Actors and Actresses (Play). For Best Supporting Actor and Actress (Musical), nominees range from Jarrod Spector and James Monroe Igleheart, to Lena Hall and Adriane Lenox.

Other big nominations (for both Play and Musical) include Best Sound Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Scenic Design, Best Book, Best Costumes, and Best Choreography. The Tony’s (and Oliviers) are often considered some of the most finicky, and picky, awards in the entertainment industry. Unlike film awards, theatre awards are much more technical at times.

Stay tuned for more on the Tony’s as the ceremony draws ever closer! For a full list of nominations, click here.
