All year round, BAFTA provide opportunities for members of the public to attend classes, lectures, and screenings, designed to help those who want to either break into the industry, or are just interested in film and television production. And this May, the programme is jam-packed full of interesting events to attend.
On Monday 12th May, BAFTA is honouring documentary-maker Roger Graef in A BAFTA Tribute. The night will see a celebration of his fifty-year career as director, producer and executive producer, as well as his views on the future of the medium. Pioneering new methods of storytelling in documentaries, Graef has made significant contributions not just to the world of film and TV, but also to everyday life in Britain through the political influence of his films.
This month also sees five BAFTA Masterclasses taking place across the country. In Manchester on Saturday 10th, Oscar-winning Mark Sanger (Gravity, Children of Men) will talk about the world of editing, including how new technology impacts upon storytelling. Hair and make-up designer Christine Blundell (The Fifth Estate, Vera Drake) will be at the BFI on Thursday 22nd to discuss her craft and career, including her long working relationship with Mike Leigh. On Thursday 29th, Stuart Aitken will be in Glasgow to talk about animation, games, and visual effects. Concluding May’s Masterclasses, production designer Andy Nicholson will be in Bristol on Saturday 31st to discuss digital technology in film art departments, especially with reference to Gravity and Divergent.
May also sees a TV preview of Peter Bowker’s From Here to There on Wednesday 7th, with a Q&A session with members of the cast and creative team. The BAFTA Chairman’s Screening this month will celebrate 25 years of BAFTA-winning TV series Cutting Edge, on Thursday 15th. At the Royal Albert Hall on 30th May, Michael Giacchino’s work as a film and TV composer (Star Trek, Lost, Mission Impossible III) will be celebrated with a discussion, clips and live performances.
