We’re into June! And you know what that means for I’m With Geek – time to tell you all about what’s going on with the BAFTA Learning and Events Team. Every month, they hold lectures, masterclasses and screenings across the country (and occasionally, beyond) to celebrate the creative industries, help professionals further their careers and give members of the public an insight into what goes on in the worlds of film, TV and games. So, what events could you be attending this month?
Also on 4th June, this time in London, BAFTA are hosting a TV Preview of BBC One’s A Song for Jenny. The new factual drama explores one woman’s response to her daughter’s murder in the London bombings of July 7th 2005. The screening will be followed by a question and answer session with actress Emily Watson, executive producer Stephen Wright, screenwriter Frank McGuinness and the real-life subject of the drama, Julie Nicholson.
On 9th and 11th June, BAFTA are once again putting on a couple of Brits to Watch: The Screenings events in New York and LA. BAFTA-nominated director Carol Morley (Dreams of a Life, The Alcohol Years) will be taking part in the showcase events that introduce outstanding British talent to the US film industry.
There’s a fair amount happening in Wales in June. On 10th June, Cardiff will see a screening of new film Bypass. It’s the second feature from writer-director Duane Hopkins, and is the tale of a petty criminal supporting his family on a council estate in Gateshead, with George MacKay starring as main character Tim. The screening will be followed by a question and answer session with producer Samm Haillay.
BAFTA is also celebrating legendary Hong Kong film director Johnnie To this month on 22nd June, as he’ll be looking back at A Life In Pictures. He’ll be discussing his craft and career at an event co-presented by the Asian Film Awards Academy, looking back at some of his action and gangster films that have seen him acclaimed at film festivals across the globe.
The highlight of BAFTA’s television industry events is its annual BAFTA Television Lecture, this year taking place on 30th June. With previous speakers including the likes of Stephen Fry, Armando Iannucci and Alan Yentob, it’s a chance for some of television’s leading figures to talk about creative excellence in television and their vision for the future. This year, the lecture will be given by Tim Hincks, president of Endemol Shine Group (responsible for a wide output of British TV, including BAFTA-winning shows like Peaky Blinders, Broadchurch and One Born Every Minute). If you can’t get tickets to the event, transcripts and video highlights will be available on the BAFTA Guru website following the lecture.
Remember, if you want any more information on these events, or want to book your tickets to attend, check out the BAFTA website now.
