Total War is a franchise that has been around for quite some time now. Each rendition has taken us to a slice of history, in order to fight nations and build empires, using a mix of turn-based resource management and real-time combat. However while the series has taken us to feudal Japan, the Roman Empire and Napoleonic Europe, its latest offering is somewhat more... fantastical.

Each rendition has taken us to a slice of history, in order to fight nations and build empires, using a mix of turn-based resource management and real-time combat. However while the series has taken us to feudal Japan, the Roman Empire and Napoleonic Europe, its latest offering is somewhat more... fantastical.
In a newly released cinematic trailer, Sega has revealed a departure from the franchise's historical roots to instead take us to the far more chaotic world of Warhammer. While this move does promise some new elements to the sometimes stale series, such as magic and mythical beasts, it is surely going to disappoint many Total War fans who prefer the more grounded settings that are typical. However, this is not to say that Warhammer and Total War are not perfect partners for each other. Warhammer is a fantasy world that has a rich background and history woven into it, while simultaneously Total War's real-time warfare will create the kind of visceral atmosphere required to give the game the required gritty edge. No matter what, it'll be interesting to see where this is going...
