Looking back - Five best games of 2013

2013 was a great year for games. So great in fact that it's taken us this long to play through everything and make up our minds as to what were our favourites. I'll take the reins first I think!

Fortunately I think I've finally figured out what mine were. although the competition was very high. So without any more ado, here are my top five gaming triumphs from last year.

Overly Sexualised Gaming #3 - Just do it already!

If you play games as much as we do then you know all too well the tactics game developers deploy to make sales. Scantily clad babes in armour aside, there is another way to sell sex to audiences without being too upfront about it. Since the dawn of story driven gaming (or you know, good stories in general) there has always been a hero who falls for a heroine and the two have undeniable sexual tension that have us screaming “Do it already!”

Heroes of Nostalgia - Spyro the Dragon (Part One)

To celebrate the UK cinema release of the highly anticipated How To Train Your Dragon 2, we’re looking back at one of the most memorable and recognisable dragons in the history of gaming.

Whilst his games seem to have drifted into lowly spin-off territory now (just check out Skylanders, and cringe if you must) but Spyro the Dragon has starred in a grand total of thirteen games, spanning a range of consoles since 1998 – which I think you’ll agree is impressive for any adolescent reptile.

Why PC gaming is awesome

As I sat here and look at my current setup I have my Wii U, PS4 and beneath both of them is the beast that is my gaming PC. Honestly, it’s my favourite platform to game on. I’m going to list my reasons why I believe it trumps the console counterparts. I also promise to try and avoid a “PC Master Race” standpoint.

And so the long journey reaches its end. The final boss is defeated and the gameplay dissolves into a final, rewarding cinematic. But there are some such endings which stand out to us a lot more than others, ensuring that the game in question (whatever it may be) remains on our shelves forever.

In fact, it can even be claimed that the first-person shooter has defined the previous generation of consoles. As your usually silent protagonist cuts through hordes of enemies with automatic firearm, the genre's success has seen it remain steadfast in the ongoing console war.

In the beginning, there was Hironobu Sakaguchi. And he said, ‘Let there be Light Warriors!’ And thus began one of the most critically acclaimed, influential, and best-selling video game franchises of all time.

The beginning in this case was 1987, the year that the very first Final Fantasy game was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is no exaggeration to say that gaming would never be the same again. Spanning generations, consoles, and a host of fantastical worlds, the story of Final Fantasy and its remarkable evolution is a story well worth recounting.

I am not a massive gamer. I wish I were. There are some stellar games out at the moment that tickle my fancy, including the, so I’ve heard, amazing The Last of Us, the creepy Bioshock and I would like to explore the haunting world of Silent Hill because I don’t like to sleep at night. But alas, I am not a gamer; the buzz to pick up a control never seemed to itch in my thumbs and the more I shy away from the consoles, the more I find it hard to relate to it.
