I’m not sure what excites me about it. Perhaps the fact that it’s a bit of a different take on war films, instead of focusing on the battles it focuses on what is going on behind the scenes. We’ve had films such as Saving Private Ryan that focus mostly on the fighting, or The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas that focuses on the Holocaust. The Monuments Men is instead about the work of people that have not necessarily been noticed for their work and what they did during the war. They saved so much history and so many achievements, and if they hadn’t of achieved what they did, well, like the trailer said, it would be like the pasts of the people had never existed. Constantly on the edge, afraid of being caught, stealing from right under Hitler’s nose, it sounds like a film that could keep you on the edge of your seat.
Forget about the star studded cast for a moment. I am always drawn to films about true stories. There is just something about watching a film and knowing that actually happened that interests me. It’s a great way to learn about things you never knew before. But the trailer makes it seem so real, such a momentous task, you wonder how on earth they did it. It shows war films don’t have to be all about the front line. Don’t ever forget about the men behind the scenes. Plus, it’s always nice to add a bit of light humour to the mix.
With George Clooney, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin and Hugh Bonneville, the film promises to be brilliant. However I have a feeling that if I go into the cinema after its release in February next year and it doesn’t live up to my expectations, I will be very, very disappointed indeed.
