Based on a true story during World War Two, The Monuments Men follows the quest of a war platoon that had been sent to Germany by Franklin Roosevelt. Their mission: to recover artistic masterpieces from thieving Nazi’s, and to then return them to their rightful owners. With the masterpieces placed behind enemy lines and the platoon consisting of nothing more than seven museum directors, curators, and art historians (who have no clue on where to start with a machine gun or grenade launcher) the task is seemingly impossible to complete.
It will be a big moment for George Clooney, who will not only be on the star-studded cast (along with Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin and Hugh Bonneville) but will also be producing and directing the film. After producing Oscar-winning Argo last year, it seems the sky’s the limit for Clooney, and he aims to write his name over all parts of the movie business. Let’s be frank here, Clooney has a lot of talent, and not just for acting, but for producing, directing and writing as well. It’s practically certain that we will be in for a treat here.
But let’s not forget about everyone else involved in the making of this movie. Matt Damon, most famously known for his role in the Bourne trilogy, has a lot he can bring to the table, especially with his action-packed repertoire. He plays James Rorimer, an American Museum curator. Next there is Cate Blanchett, who is known for her role as Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. Her character is Rose Vallend, a French art historian and spy for the French under the nose of the Germans. In fact, the whole of the main cast have a great arsenal of varied acting experience and expertise over many genres, so it is hard to imagine them all being in a film together and for it to be a shambles. Surely that can’t happen here?
Based on a true story, with such a brilliant cast, the backing of 20th Century Fox and a release date of February 2014, be sure not to miss it!
