The film centres around Manolo, (Diego Luna) a young man who falls in love with the beautiful Maria, (Zoe Saldana). Also, competing for Maria's hand is the charming Joaquin, (Channing Tatum). Watching the lovers are two competitive spirts La Muerte and Xibalba, who agree a wager on who Maria will choose. To win the bet, Xibalba sets a snake on Manolo sending him to the underworld. To win the heart of his true love Manolo must journey through different worlds and come face to face his greatest fear.
From this trailer the most striking thing about the whole project is the visual style. Directed by Jorge Gutierrez, creator of El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, the work has been animated using traditional Mexican art. Gutierrez has said that in viewing the concept art books of films the finished project always looks so different. He wanted to make a film that realised the concept art that animators work so hard on. Filled with vibrant colours and promising to deliver new versions of popular songs, the film looks to be a real animated treat.
We still have a bit of a wait to see if true love really can conquer all but the trailer has certainly gained our interest. The Book of Life is released here on Halloween.
