And I know what you are all going to say, “but Akira is a classic iconic piece of anime that pushed the boundaries of cult cinema and could never be made into a live action film.” Well, I say, watch the hell out of this. This is a fan video mind, not actually in the works of any big Hollywood studios trying to ruin your movies. That is probably what gives it an edge. That and it looks absolutely incredible. Those out of the loop, Akira is based on a whopping 2181 page Manga of the same name, so understandably follows a bit of a different version of events. Set in Neo-Tokyo of future 2019, Akira centres on Tetsuo, a member of motorcycle gang the Capsules lead by his best friend Kaneda. They rival other gang, the Clowns. However, when Tetsuo crashes his bike after near crashing to an esper (a person possessing psychic abilities,) Doctors at the hospital soon find that Tetsuo possesses psychic powers too
This is already making the ways around the internet to much furore. Starring Osric Chau (Kevin of Supernatural fame,) it looks intensely good and it captures the feel, the insanity and the captivating storyline. We are insanely giddy other it, Paul quotes "It feels like a budget version of a Kazuaki Kiriya flick, but I don't mean that in a bad way."
There is some potential here to expand it into the full length movie and judging by this, it will work. For now, enjoy this five minute slice of what director Nguyen-Anh Nguyen can do. Thanks to the support of many contributors, this trailer has hit and got us all giddy. The Akira Project may just be hoping on it's motorcycle and heading for great things.
