Oh, yes, it looks like another romance piece.
Initially, there was no interest in this movie. Lovely, dovey romantic period drama about a vagabond thief and a dying women. Smushy and gooey it seemed sickly sweet. There is an exact moment in this trailer though, where all that sort of switches and goosebumps rise, stand to attention on your skin and you are lost in the moment. You can feel the tears teeter on the rim of your eyes and your heart swells at least three sizes like The Grinch when the Whoville begins to sing.
That exact moment is when the Birdy track “Wings” kicks in.
So let’s not but all the pressure on that one track that is outstanding and breath-taking in it’s own right. A New York Winter’s Tale is a different kind of love story starring Colin Farrell, Jennifer Connolley, Jessica Brown Findlay and Russell Crowe. It tells the tale of a robber, Peter, who stumbles into the house of a very sick woman named Beverley. However, instead of stealing everything from her frail fingers, the two suddenly form a bond that could save both of them. That’s only the half of it when suddenly Peter is in the future, having survived all those years. How is that possible? There is only one way to find out.
Naturally, this movie looks like it is going to be schmaltzy as hell. And let’s not forget Crowe is again on hot pursuit of our lead character. It’s just smatterings of Les Miserables without the vocal performance and the magical time travel or immortality, if that’s what is going on here. As Peter tries to figure out how it were all possible, we must again loose ourselves in a love story that will make couples curl up with one another and singles turn off with sarcastic comments.
That being said, there is a draw here and part of it is down to the likeable Jessica Brown Findlay and the fact that Colin Farrell is too under-appreciated (the man does every genre without fault.) Perhaps strong performances and the over saturation of sugary lines and love will leave the audiences dreamy and happy.
It might just be the winters warmer we wanted.
