There are a handful of regal elder women who basically rule our lives with their epic ways. Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith and Emma Thompson all spring to mind as they impact not only or entertainment but our lives. Holding a great lofty spot on that roster is Judi Dench, a phenomenal actress who has gripped us all recently as the titular real life character Philomena. Starring opposite Steve Coogan, she tells the tale of a women whose son was taken away from her when she was a child. Nominated for an Oscar, Dench’s performance was truly outstanding.
So why not look at the other Jude Dench movies you must see?

The introduction of Dench as M was a powerful one. After all, never had the popular role in James Bond been occupied as a woman. Despite the fact she first appeared in a series of Bond movies starring Pierce Brosnan (which including some pretty bad stuff,) Dench was absolutely marvellous as M. So when the latest Bond adventure Skyfall came out, it seemed imperative to concentrate on her. And true to form, Dench played a character with wit, balls and intelligence; sparring off against an enemy determined to destroy her.

What do you get when you pop all your favourite British actors into one movie set in India? You get brilliance, that’s what you get. With Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson and Maggie Smith all acting their hearts out, this story about elderly retirees who abscond to India for a better life is a wonderful humours drama. And Dench is at her best as a recent widower who relocates and starts anew. Emotional yet held back, it’s her letting go of her past relationships and finding herself that’s one of the main draws here. Plus the downing of a whole glass of gin is inspired.

Yet another movie with the delectable Maggie Smith, Judi Dench stars in this incredible movie directed and written by Charles Dance. The pair play sisters who stumbled upon a Polish stranger in their little community, washed up on the beach. As they nurse him back to health, his presence along brings stress and tension onto their lives and that of the village. The great pairing of Smith and Dench is an incredible one and their dynamics make this a must see little drama. Daniel Bruhl is also in it which is fun to see!

Another movie which saw Dench nominated for an Oscar alongside Jim Broadbent and Kate Winslet (with Broadbent scooping up the prize.) And it’s no wonder because all players here are absolutely genius. Playing author Iris Murdoch, it sees the relationship with John Bayley progress. But unhappiness unfolds when later in their life, Murdoch is diagnosed with Alzcheimers as is tended to by a frustrated Bayley. It is absolutely worth it to see the acting on display here, particularly between Broadbent and Dench. To put it bluntly it is out of this world!
