Oh yes, this time we’re looking at the mighty mountain that is Arnold Schwarzenegger (or Arnie, for short). With such terrific acting roles underneath his belt, Arnie is well known for his acting films, as there is truly no one else who can play the tough characters with such a dedicated, steely glaze, as he does. With Arnie’s latest role in Sabotage, which crash lands into cinemas in the UK today, we take a look back at some of his most epic films.
This list really wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the colossal Terminator series. It is this series for which Arnie is probably most well-known, and despite only having 18 lines in the first instalment, he steals every scene. Schwarzenegger portrays a cyborg that is disguised as a human being, and sent back in time to assassinate the infamous Sarah Connor, and his voice, stature and movement is everything you could want (and hope for). Arnie’s most influential performances come courtesy of the first and second instalment, The Terminator and The Terminator 2: Judgment Day, respectively.
Now, of course we are not talking about the 2012 reboot, but the original 1990 classic. Schwarzenegger was back in full force and starring as Douglas Quaid in this dystopian science fiction adventure. Total Recall documents Quaid’s journey in discovering who he really is and why he had his memory erased, by travelling to Mars. Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin also feature, as Lori Quaid and Melina, respectively, bringing some intense fighting scenes to the picture. Suitably complex and visually astounding, Total Recall marked a real winner for Arnie is his career as an actor.
James Cameron was at the helm of this 1994 action comedy, which followed the life of Harry Tasker, as portrayed by of course, the great Arnold Schwarzenegger. In the film, Tasker leads a double life as an agent performing covert missions for the US Government under a task force called ‘The Omega Sector’. Possibly one of the most bizarre but still highly entertaining spy films out there, True Lies encompasses heavy layers of comedy as well as action, proving that action films don’t always have to take themselves so seriously.
Back to 1985 and Arnie is once again taking on the lead role as Col. John Matrix, a retired Delta Force Operative whose daughter is taken in attempt to persuade Matrix into carrying out a political assassination. Arnie equips himself with multiple weapons throughout the film, including a rather infamous rocket launcher, which helped elevate the film to its cult status. Commando is another prime example of Schwarzenegger in his element; action films.
