This morning, the film world awoke to the sound of fanfares the 2014 British Academy Film Award nominations were announced in London. Gravity is the big swinger this year with 11 nominations (including Best Film and Best British Film, an honour shared by Philomena). Behind them in the award count 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle, both of which scored 10 nominations each.
Best Director category looks to be a strong set for the most part (personally, I don't think David O. Russell should be in there), although it does serve up one interesting rematch. Both Paul Greengrass and Martin Scorsese find themselves nominated for the same award for the first time since 2006. Greengrass took the BAFTAS for United 93, though Scorsese would later go on to finally take home the Oscar that same year for The Departed. However, that they're up against Alfonso Cuarón and Steve McQueen, who have both been doing very well with their own work.
The lead acting categories represent a pretty strong showing altogether, although there are perhaps surprises to be had amongst the omissions. That Robert Redford gets no nod for his turn in All is Lost is surprising, though the real shock comes from Oscar Isaac's turn in the Coen's Inside Llewyn Davis, which itself receives only three categories. The Actress side of things looks like it will be a pretty straight two-way contest between Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett... that is, unless, one of the two British ladies pull a shock win.
Supporting Actress also makes interesting reading if for no other reason it pits two Best Actress Oscar winners, Julia Roberts and Jennifer Lawrence, against Oprah Winfrey.
There's already some surprise in the Best Documentary category, given that Sarah Polley's Stories We Tell seems to be missing from the short list. This could be moot, however, since most will be backing the harrowing The Act of Killing, which stands a decent chance of picking up Best Foreign Film as well... which probably means it won't, but will lock it for Documentary.
The three horse race of Best Animated Film would seem to Disney's to lose, with Frozen looking the most likely to swing it over Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University. Be quite the upset otherwise.
The technical awards showcase a good... let's be honest, it's gonna be Gravity that takes most, if not all those awards, isn't it?
