It is that time of the year where the world turns to most prestigious awards. The crème de la crème of statuettes. The one that all actors, actresses and filmmakers turn to as a notch on their belt and also the awards audiences hold most dear. Not that it isn’t without its controversy, as year by year movies are voted by popularity rather than decency. However, it is officially time for the 86th Academy Award nominations and what do you know, it is predictable but with a few surprise sandwiched in there to make it fresh. But that’s just the independent film blogger in me.
There are, as usual, nine nominations for Best Film this year. Thankfully, several of them are much deserved including Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips, Philomena and the stellar 12 Years A Slave. Unfortunately, due to time lapse, judgement cannot be fully made on Her and Dallas Buyers Club but kudos to Spike Jonze on his recognition he is getting for a much anticipated movie.
Best Actor is full of surprises and yet another Oscar Nod to Leonardo DiCaprio that he will, inevitably lose. That’s not to say that his performance wasn’t impressive but the whole pack up for the award is strong. Money is on Chiwetel Ejiofor; whose outstanding portrayal of Solomon Northup should scoop the award. But with McConaughey having that Golden Globe already tucked under his belt, it is definitely between the two of them.
Best Actress has Cate Blanchet for Blue Jasmine, Judi Dench for Philomena and Sandra Bullock for Gravity as well as nominations of Amy Adams and Meryl Streep. Frankly, Blanchet has this hands down for being one of the greater things of Blue Jasmine but there is a lot of appreciation for Dench and her emotionally brilliant role in Philomena. That being said, this could go to Bullock as a last minute jolt for her breath-taking performance.
Taking the lead with Best Supporting Actor sees Jared Leto, Michael Fassbender, Jonah Hill, Barkhad Abdi and Bradley Cooper all in the running. Yes, Jonah Hill is now a two time Academy Award Nominee so gone are the days of dickjokes and wanting sex. But still, this award seems safely in the hands of Leto or Fassbender. Well, that is the hope. (Although, if I am being honest here, I would have loved to haves seen
Best Director, again, predictable and the fight here is really between Steve McQueen and Alfonso Cuaron. One will want to lean towards the later because it is definitely the better deserved. But Cuaron won Golden Globes and there has been a stiff truth that Best Director and Best Film awards don’t necessary match up. There is also Alexander Payne, David O'Russell (who should step as far away from the award as possible) and Martin Scorcese.
Spike Jones is a shoe in for Best Original Screenplay for Her but Best Adapted Screenplay is torn between 12 Years A Slave, Captain Phillips and The Wolf of Wall Street. Although, one would love to see Steve Coogan scoop up the award for Philomena.
Tension over Best Foreign Movie as The Hunt was a true masterpiece movie while The Great Beauty is an astonishing movie.
Best Documentary needs to be won, hands down, by The Act of Killing but I would have loved to see it take away a Best Film nomination or Best Director.
“Let It Go” will probably win for Frozen and Disney will no doubt scoop up Best Animation but happily, The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Ernest and , and The Wind Rises all have nominations.
And in hilariousness, Bad Grandpa is up for Best Make-Up. Surprisingly, no love for the Cohen brothers and Inside Llewlyn Davis.
That is enough speculation, more to come the closer we get to the award ceremony. After all, you want to read the full list; here it is. Is there anything sorely missed from the nominations? Any movie that blew your mind but wasn’t considered? (What Maizie Knew) Who do you think will win?
