For several years there were talks, rumours, little whispers in the entertainment industry that there was going to be a Robocop remake. When I first heard of said rumours, I had a moment of silence, as a sign of respect; another classic was going to be remade. Sure they were just rumours, but usually when the rumours are going viral and there’s uproar it means the ink is still wet from writing the screenplay. Now as we all know the impending doom is upon us, yes Robocop the remake will be hitting our cinemas very shortly.
But before I go on I need to cleanse my film pallet with a walk down memory lane with the original Robocop starring none other than Peter ‘FUCKING’ Weller…that is the only way his name should be said.

But before I go on I need to cleanse my film pallet with a walk down memory lane with the original Robocop starring none other than Peter ‘FUCKING’ Weller…that is the only way his name should be said.
The year is 2029, and a cop named Alex Murphy has just been annihilated with bullets and ultimately murdered by a murderous gang. While this is going on, a company named Omni Consumer Products have bought out the Detroit Police Department, and once hearing of Alex Murphy’s demise they decide to turn his corpse into Robocop. Pretty badass and simple plot, and just all kinds of freakin’ amazing! Whenever you mention 80’s films you cannot go far into the discussion without mentioning Robocop. It really was innovative for it’s time, and while some may look back on it now and believe it’s cheesy, there is a large group of people who love how creative and special this film really is. This film is embedded into so many peoples childhood memories. How excited were you when you saw the film come on screen and your parents ACTUALLY let you watch it? C’mon so many of you saw this film as a child, I mean how many parents thought this would be violent?
Critics, viewers and just all round narrow minded people cannot take away what Robocop did for pop culture and influencing other Sci-Fi films. Obviously the films that came after it weren’t going to be as good, but it’s awesome seeing them pay homage to it. This film is far more than 80’s cheese, it’s a Sci-Film with class. I think just attaching Peter ‘FUCKING’ Weller’s name to it just gives it that distinct touch of class. That man can do no wrong, and he is a very underrated actor. While a lot of people may think his portrayal of Robocop is very mediocre and sombre, it really is the complete opposite. Underneath that cold voice is a man who's life was drastically cut short. At times it really does make you wonder ‘shit does he know what his new life is like now?’ It was questions like that which is what added that extra layer of depth to the film, which is why a lot of people now look at this film with love and fondness, and that’s the way it should be. If a film can give you such feelings so many years after it was initially released then it has done it’s job.

Two sequels later made people not take the original film seriously, and it is really sad when that happens. Robocop 2 was a decent sequel, Robocop 3, not so much. But hey it really isn’t the worst film ever made in a franchise. And then the Robocop TV series was released, and then it became apparent that it was more about selling toys, it lost that edge that the original film had. So for several years the dust had finally settled, it seemed people had forgotten about Peter ‘FUCKING’ Weller and Robocop…until the rumours of a possible remake made it to the surface. So it was announced there would be a remake, yep it was official…and then you could hear the screams of millions of fanatics around the world who cherished the original film. And then silence, the remake was forgotten about…until that god awful trailer made it’s first appearance.
This remake has all the makings of being a brilliant film, but just by looking at the trailer, you can see the heart that is missing, you can see that it won’t be as gritty and as violent as the original and also…WHERE THE HELL IS PETER ‘FUCKING’WELLER’…oh and hang on wait…Robocop’s suit is BLACK? What is this? Now you may thinking ‘Woah this is one narrow minded article’…but it truly isn’t. Yes the original will always be the best, and this remake shouldn’t be happening.However I can see the awesome actors in this film and that is what makes the film partially enticing. You have Michael Keaton, Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson, now that is a brilliant combination. The title roll of Robocop belongs to Joel Kinnamen, which all the ladies can agree he is easy on the eye, but will he be able to portray the same depth as Peter ‘FUCKING’ Weller?
Here is a tip from me if you do decide to go and see this film. Do not go in thinking this is a remake to Robocop, just think of it as a stand alone film which pays homage to the original…and just think of an alternate title like Shiny Cyborg Cop.
Will I be going to see the remake to Robocop? The answer is no. Will I be going to see 'Shiny Cyborg Cop? Hell YES!
