Brutal is the newest film to be produced and directed by the multi-talented Donald Flaherty. After making a few different genres, including a short film titled The Death of Batman and a feature length comedy film called The Steamroom, Flaherty turned his attention to a blend of sci-fi and action in Brutal, which was released to American audiences on the 5th January this year.
A blend of sci-fi and action? Yes, and it works so well!
Jeff Hatch plays Derek, the latest prey of the alien force, who becomes pitted against Trevor in a series of gut-wrenching and physically profound fights which the likes of Jet Li and Jackie Chan would be proud of. Both Benoit and Hatch are astounding in their action sequences, which specially designed and choreographed by two of the best stunt performers who have held their own in countless blockbusters collectively; Colin Follenweider (Die Hard, X-Men) and Chris Torres (Hostel Part III and Set Up).
Prepare for lots of blood to be spilt and lots of tears to be shed, for Brutal truly lives up to its title. The storyline itself seems simple enough on the surface, but it is so much more than two men fighting each other with blood flowing from their noses.
Brutal provides a rare opportunity to experience the ruthlessness of man’s humanity; the brutality that we are all capable of if put under enough stress and tension. It is a truly horrific notion that we are all violent and animalistic inside, and Flaherty brings this disgusted idea out into the open for his audiences to revel in. If all of Flaherty’s films are this bold and unfailingly intelligent, he is sure to reach big heights within his career.
