First off, wishing everyone a happy mother’s day from the I’m With Geek Staff! So we thought in the spirit of the day it might be fun to take a look at the greatest Mothers Science Fiction television and movies have ever produced!
In no particular order...

Martha Kent is the adoptive mother of Clark Kent (otherwise known as Superman). Unable to conceive a baby Martha and her husband Jonathan Kent came across baby Kal-El (Clark Kent) during a meteor shower, Clark was the perfect gift for Martha and Jonathan. They raised him as their own, always trying to protect his secret powers and origin. Lionel Luthor (Lex Luthor’s tyrannical father) hired Martha as his personal assistant, he was attracted to her and offered her a promotion, she chose to protect her son’s secret over her own career, as Lionel was trying to find out about Clarks origins.
In protecting her son, she lost not only her career (as both a legal and personal assistant, but the love of her life and her only biological child. Martha and Jonathon’s car rolls after an explosion accidently caused by Clark, and Martha loses her unborn baby in the accident. Jonathan, who had heart issues following a stint with Clark’s powers, suffered a fatal heart attack after getting very worked up and agitated warning Lionel Luthor to stay away from his family.

Martha’s life of sacrifice finally pays off as she watches her son save Earth from ‘Apokolips’ and become the hero he was born to be!

Doctor Who
Amy Pond, first seen as a little girl praying to Santa in the episode The Eleventh Hour, who grew to be the Doctor’s longest serving companion since the series was revived in 2005, first confessed she was pregnant in the episode The Impossible Astronaut just hours after witnessing the doctors death and funeral, believing she was mistaken she decided to go off with the doctor for more adventures! Haunted by a strange woman with an eye patch who had a habit of sliding walls open to look at her wherever she is.
She continues her travels with the doctor and her husband Rory Williams until she suddenly develops pains in the episode The Almost People. Amy is shocked when the Doctor tells her she is going into labour, after revealing that she is in fact a replica Amy, the real Amy Pond wakes up in the Daemons Run facility and delivers her baby. The mysterious people who kidnapped her were not interested in Amy, they wanted the baby, Melody Pond who was conceived inside the TARDIS, mid flight, giving Melody special genes which were easily manipulated by Amy’s kidnappers into Timelord genes, believing that a Timelord would be the ultimate weapon against the Doctor.

When the doctor first meets the grown up Melody Pond she attempts to kill him and succeeds, as per her conditioning by her captors, but after discovering who the doctor really is she gives up the rest of her regenerations (a Timelords way of cheating death) to bring him back to life. Amy, Rory and the Doctor set off leaving Melody to make her own way in the world.

Finally Amy gives up being able to see her grown up daughter again, traveling back into a timelocked era where Rory has been sent. She sacrifices her relationship with The Doctor and her Daughter to be with the one she loves, knowing that her daughter will be safe with her mad best friend.

Harry Potter
Molly Weasey, married to Arthur Weasley, is the mother of Ron, Fred, George, Percy, Bill, Charlie and Ginny Weasley. She always, throughout her time of knowing him, treated Harry Potter as a son. When Voldermort returns to power Molly struggles in The Order of the Phoenix to defeat a simple Boggart, a creature that reflects your fears back at you. Harry enters the room to find the boggart impersonating various members of the family lying in a pool of blood on the floor to Molly Weasley’s sobs, her biggest fear is that she will lose someone in her family to the battle against the dark lord and her fears are not unwise.
In The Order of the Phoenix the love of her life Arthur Weasley is gravely wounded and nearly dies after being attacked by the great snake Nagini, in The Half Blood Prince after Dumbledore has been murdered and the death eaters are attempting to leave Hogwarts he Order are putting up a fight to stop them, Bill Weasley is attacked and bitten by the Werewolf Fenrir Greyback. In The Deathly Hallows, Fred Weasley is killed in the Battle of Hogwarts. Molly Weasley sacrifices a lot of her family for Harry, someone she viewed as another son.
And finally, lest we forget Molly’s heroic defence of her daughter Ginny against Bellatrix Lestrange, shown below.
Back To the Future
Lorraine McFly is the mother of Dave, Linda and Marty McFly and wife to George McFly. When she was at high school she was a very pretty lady, and as such was rather popular with the boys. One boy in particular made many advances on her, Biff. In Back to the Future Part II Lorraine demonstrates just how much of a good mother she is, the only thing she cares about is her children. In Back To The Future Part II Biff travels back in time and gives himself a sports results almanac, therefore giving him a way to make as much money as he could possibly want, this changes the future so when Marty comes back to the present day (the 80’s) he is greeted with the news that his father, George McFly was murdered, the town is under the control of Biff, the police work for him so the town is a wreck.

Luckily this version of reality is wiped out when Marty and Doc Brown go back in time and stop Biff from acquiring the sports almanac. As a result George McFly was not murdered and continued to provide for his family. Lorraine in the present (the second, happier present after Marty’s meddling in BTTF Part 1) always seems a very happy person, a tennis champion with her doubles partner George McFly for the past 6 years.

The Walking Dead
Lori Grimes is the wife of Rick Grimes, mother of Carl and baby Judith. At the beginning of the series, when the world is quite literally going to hell, Lori, believing Rick to be dead after his accident, leaves to seek refuge in Atlanta with Rick’s best friend and partner Shane Walsh. Shane, as a strong policeman, can defend Lori and her Son from the hoards of the walking dead. Lori would do anything to protect her son Carl, she soon falls for Shane, which makes life very difficult when Rick reappears.
Lori, feeling guilty for her affair with Shane does not question Rick when he makes decision’s which put others, including Carl at risk. She discovers halfway through season two that she is in fact pregnant and she only truly comes to her senses at the end of the second season when she learns that Rick has killed Shane after he attempted to trap and kill him, believing that he put Carl, Lori and her unborn baby in danger. She then focuses her love and care almost purely on Carl and her unborn baby.

Finally I’d like to dedicate this article to my own mother, who knows how hard I’ve been working to make I’m With Geek a success and knows not to expect too much from me this weekend!
