But despite an excellent cast, one man stands out in particular: comedy legend Steve Martin. Martin, who starred in many successful comedies such as Planes, Trains and Automobiles and The Jerk, plays Orin Scrivello, an abusive, sadistic and nitrous oxide huffing dentist, who dates Audrey and regularly beats her. You hear that description and think “sounds like a hateable character”, right? Well, Mr. Martin makes it impossible to hate him as he presents us with this undeniably wacky performance.
We first meet him about half an hour into the film, and he is introduced with his first song: 'Dentist!' We see him, riding his motor cycle, rocking an awesome haircut and leather jacket as he pulls up to work. In the song, he sings of him job as a dentist, and talks of all the pain he causes and how much he loves it. Despite how hilarious the scene is, such as nurses getting punched and of course that, um, lovely picture of his Mum, it’s also quite painful to watch (my teeth hurt every time I see it) as he uses all sorts of instruments and twists and turns them into his patients’ mouths, and just, ugh.... *shudders*
Nethertheless, the song is extremely catchy, and one you’ll find yourself singing for days after watching!
