Whilst the name H.R.Giger may not be the name that instantly springs to mind for many people when they are asked to think about one of the most influential men in the world of horror cinema, he has had one of the biggest impacts on the genre. He was the original concept artist on the 1979 film Alien, and has caused countless people to have nightmares from his creations over the years.
It is with great sadness to announce that yesterday, Giger passed away in hospital as a result of injuries he sustained from a recent fall. During his 74 years, he became known for his sexualised style of artwork and the influence his own night terrors had on his art, and how his surreal and monochrome work soon become his most recognised style.
Film fans will know of his original interest to work with Alejandro Jodorowsky on the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune. This project never came to fruition, but David Lynch did use some of his designs as inspiration for his version of the novel. As mentioned earlier though, it was his work on the Alien franchise that brought him to the attention of the masses, and he was part of the team that won an Academy Award for Best Achievement for Visual Effects for their contribution.

It isn't often that one man can have such an influence on the world and yet so many not know who he is, and that only in his passing will people come to find out about someone that has made such a contribution to the world of film.
He will be sadly missed not just by film fans, but by many within the art world as well and it doesn’t look like there will be a visionary like him around for a very long time.
