Since reading The Hunger Games books five years ago, I was introduced to a post-apocalyptic world, whose central entertainment was to watch 24 kids fight to the death in a big arena. I loved it. I wasn’t filled with my usual dread when they announced there was going to be a film. Sometimes I am sceptical, like many people, about how true to the book the films would be, and if they were all that necessary. But I was excited.
Queue the end of my back-story.
Most pleasing was how true they were to the books. Some may say “but then you have no surprises when you watch it.” But the thought of someone cutting out a part of a book for no real reason, makes a lot of people angry (see: Peeves from Harry Potter.) It would be an insult to present an author with a film version that has cut out some of the original storyline. Plus, why would you want to cut any of it anyway? The world that Suzanne Collins has created, plus the characters and plot to fill it, are astounding.
But let’s turn to the film itself. Firstly, congratulations on Debra Zane foramazing casting choices. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutchinson and Liam Hemsworth were perfect matches for the characters. They could very easily become the next Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. They are set on becoming huge icons in the film industry, and it’s always better when that starts when you are on the young end of the spectrum. If their amazing acting skills in this film are anything to go by, they have extremely bright futures ahead of them.
But then don’t even get me started on the arena itself and what goes on inside it. The special effects are spectacular; it looks exactly how people would have imagined it would. The Mutts (featured towards the end of the film) are extraordinary, terrifying and yet extremely heartbreaking to see,
Now I could go on and on about how great this film is, but then that won’t give you guys enough time to go watch it before the new release. So “Fly my pretties, fly!” and go and watch this epic, heart-stopping movie now before the rush of the second film.
Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be EVER in your favour!
