There’s something beautiful about the imagination. You can come up with the most randomest, craziest ideas and people can shrug them off. But if you can make them work, they can be amazing. So when someone thought up the idea to have Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Sandman, the Tooth Fairy and Jack Frost team up to defeat The Boogeyman, it sounded like an absolutely bonkers idea. But fortunately for us, they made it work.

So when someone thought up the idea to have Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Sandman, the Tooth Fairy and Jack Frost team up to defeat The Boogeyman, it sounded like an absolutely bonkers idea. But fortunately for us, they made it work.
Jack Frost (Chris Pine) is a lonely, mischievous individual who knows nothing of his past. He longs to find out where he came from, and why he is who he is today. But when Pitch Black (Jude Law), the essence of fear and the Nightmare King, plans to destroy the good dreams and imagination of children all over the world, Jack is called upon to join the Guardians: Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin), The Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), The Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) and the Sandman. Together, they are sworn to protect the children of the Earth who still believe, as it is their belief that gives them power.
Clearly, someone let their imagination run wild when they thought this up. This film is utterly fantastic. All the cast’s voices fit the characters perfectly, especially Alec Baldwin because we all know that Santa is Russian (Obviously). Hugh Jackman is hilarious as the Easter Bunny, and his back and forths with Santa are brilliant. Jude Law makes for a very creepy villain, and Chris Pine is less annoying than usual when it’s just his voice. The film is so well written, and genuinely rather emotional and scary at times. Despite this, it’s a wonderful idea and there is tons of fun to be had with it. It’s almost like a child’s fantasy come to life, yet it honestly doesn’t matter how old you are – This film can be enjoyed by just about anyone. And it’s hard to imagine a film as childish as this having a deep, engaging back but the flashbacks to Jack’s past and his pining (Haha, get it, cause he’s voiced by Chris Pi- Okay, I’m sorry) to know the truth are genuinely the most interesting part of the film.

Dreamworks don’t seem to get nearly as much recognition as they deserve. When it comes to animated films, most tend to rave over Disney and Pixar. And whilst Dreamworks don’t exactly have the perfect track record of those two companies (looking at you, Shrek 4), they’ve made enough great films to solidify their place as one of the best animation companies out there. From the original Shrek film and How to Train Your Dragon, to Madagascar 3 and last year’s Oscar nominated The Croods, Dreamworks know how to craft fun, engaging films which may not perhaps hit the same level of quality or sentimental value of Disney/Pixar’s releases, but are perfect for light family enjoyment, and Rise of the Guardians is no exception.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a small child or a grown adult, I just know that you’re going to love Rise of the Guardians – I can feel it in my belly.
