In a world where it appears that any movie can be turned into a musical (American Psycho, we’re looking at you) it still comes as quite a shock to hear that the much loved, cult movie Back to the Future is coming to the stage. Fear not though BTTF fans as the team behind the original trilogy are actually the ones who are producing this version as well. Robert Zemekis who directed the films and co-wrote them Bob Gale have apparently been playing with the idea for the past decade, and seeing how 2015 marks the 30th anniversary of the first film, the timing couldn’t have been better.
It wouldn’t be a Back to the Future movie without Alan Silvestri, the original score composer being involved and he is the man behind the music this time around as well. He will be providing new original music and lyrics alongside Glen Ballard. What about fan favourite’s Johnny B. Goode and The Power of Love, well they are going to be in there as well; alongside a whole host of other songs from Huey Lewis & The News and Chuck Berry. I’m sure with this instalment to the franchise “the kids are going to love it” even more.
Jamie Lloyd, the director of the show, has expressed his excitement for the project already; “I am thrilled to be directing and co-writing this exciting new musical based on their masterful film, which has become embedded in our popular culture. Rather than attempt to recreate such an iconic movie on stage, we have assembled a brilliant artistic team to discover a unique theatrical language to take audiences on a journey through time in a vibrant, unexpected way”
The musical will be premiered in London in 2015 and will travel onto Broadway after its run in the UK, and I’m sure plenty of fans are going to wish they had a DeLorean handy so they can get their hands on a ticket for this show.
Let’s just hope it is better than this!
