The biggest news from the festival is the premiere of Anton Corbijn’s A Most Wanted Man. The film, an adaptation of John le Carre’s acclaimed novel, is notable for being one of the final films starring the late Philip Seymour Hoffman (with his two Mockingjay films still to follow). Corbijn is perhaps best known for his biopic of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, Control, which earned rave reviews.
Also garnering buzz pre-festival is Gia Coppola’s Palo Alto, adapted from James Franco’s book. This teen drama also stars Franco alongside Emma Roberts. Other films announced include Castles in the Sky, from Regeneration director Gilles MacKinnon, which stars Eddie Izzard, and hand-drawn animation Is The Man Who Is Tall Happy?, sure to delight the numerous Edinburgh University animation students. The animation is one of two entries from director Michel Gondry, whose Mood Indigo, starring Audrey Tautou, will also be screening as part of the festival.
Other films lined up include the Dylan Thomas biopic Set Fire to the Stars, in which Elijah Wood plays an aspiring New York writer on a week-long retreat with the hell-raising poet, indie thriller Cold In July, which already has people talking, and Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer will receive its UK premiere. Rounding out the line-up are My Accomplice, a rom-com set in Brighton, Guy Pitt’s Greyhawk, Hide and Seek from Joanna Coates, the comedy A Practical Guide to Spectacular Suicide, true-story tragedy We Are Monster, and Uberto Pasolini’s Still Life.
