Actor director Jon Favreau is most commonly known as the director of the first two Iron Man instalments. After reinvigorating one of Marvel's greatest heroes Favreau has turned his attention to a personal project, Chef, that sees him playing a chef rediscovering his love of cooking. The result proves that Favreau can transfer his talents from action to comedy.
The film is written, directed and stars Jon Favreau as the titled chef. Favreau is most recognised for directing the first two Iron Man installments, Cowboys & Aliens as well as playing Monica's millionaire boyfriend in Friends. Instead of high octain action, the film follows a simple chef and a personal journey of rediscovery.
The story heavily satires the use and influence of social media, Twitter in particular. While showing the negative influence that Twitter can have after a bad food review goes viral, it also demonstrates the power of social media. When Casper takes his food truck on the road, its through Twitter that he gains a new following. This makes the film feel current and gives it an relevant edge.
The film showcases Caspers culinary expertise. Full of food preperation scenes that will have any audience member drooling. Food preparation also acts as a way for Casper to reconnect with his son when he joins him on the road.
Favreau has brilliantly cast himself as the lead in Chef. Able to demonstrate his usual humour with a more heartfelt story of rediscovery.
John Lugizimo delivers a brilliant performance as Caspers best friend and co-chef Martin. Smaller roles for his Iron Man stars Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansson make for entertaining cameos.
In terms of pace, the script keeps the film running smoothly. Despite this the film never seems to reach a climax. The resolution is all to easy and quickly established yet the film is still entertaining. A good film with a warm centre and witty script. Definitely not a film to watch on an empty stomach though.
Chef is out in cinemas tomorrow!
