New Irish film Calvary looks like it is a must see. Centring in a small village on the Emerald isles ,it stars Brendan Gleeson as a benevolent priest who is threatened to be killed for the villager’s sins in seven days. As he tries to figure out who is the person threatening an attempt on his life, he unearths some deadly secrets in his town. This incredible drama cannot be more blessed than to have Brendan Gleeson playing the lead. The Irish Actor has been nominated and won a lot of awards from BAFTAs to Emmys in his roles. While many may know him from the Harry Potter series, this actor is not bereft of talent and here are just some (because, frankly, we want to say all) of the essential movies that you should catch.

There are a handful of regal elder women who basically rule our lives with their epic ways. Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith and Emma Thompson all spring to mind as they impact not only or entertainment but our lives. Holding a great lofty spot on that roster is Judi Dench, a phenomenal actress who has gripped us all recently as the titular real life character Philomena. Starring opposite Steve Coogan, she tells the tale of a women whose son was taken away from her when she was a child. Nominated for an Oscar, Dench’s performance was truly outstanding.

So why not look at the other Jude Dench movies you must see?

The Essentials: Michael Fassbender

Raw talent is hard to find these days, but you need look no further than Michael Fassbender. Rising to prominence in 2007’s 300, Fassy is more than just a one trick pony. He’s starred in all varieties of film, from drama, to sci-fi, to comedy, to action and biopic. The Counsellor comes out on DVD today, but many would say it’s not one of his best.

Nevermind, have four of his best instead!

The Essentials: Philip Seymour Hoffman

This past weekend, the world said goodbye to Philip Seymour Hoffman, easily one of the most talented actors to grace the screen in the past 20 years. To honour his memory, here is a list of some essential films from the big guy, who grabbed 4 Oscar nominations and one win in his career.

Now, Hoffman starred in such a variety of films that it’s hard to narrow it down to a few. Amongst his greats, there are other fantastic films such as The Ides of March, Mission: Impossible 3, Punch-Drunk Love, Moneyball and Almost Famous.

And then there a few which I have myself haven’t seen but are certainly worth checking out, including Doubt, The Master and Capote, the film that bagged him his Best Actor Oscar
