![]() Another year has passed. Another year of superheroes, high octane action, side splitting comedy, and gripping drama. And you know what? It’s been rather fantastic. You’ve seen the films I loathed, now it’s the time for the ones I loved, and believe me, there were plenty! There are quite a few films from 2013 I haven’t yet had a chance to see, stuff like Only God Forgives, This is the End, Rush, Filth etc. But I look forward to them. Now, sadly it’s only a top ten, so there are many films that had to be cut. ![]() by Robbie Jones There are some stories that will just never stop being told. We see them over and over, all in different shapes and sizes, different interpretations and casts. But no matter how well we know it, we never get tired of seeing it. The best example of this is A Christmas Carol. Charles Dickens’ novel (Perhaps his most famous) about a bit old man who is visited by three spirits at Christmas time is a story that everyone knows off by heart. There have been countless films made, from comedies like Scrooged with the excellent Bill Murray, to the more heartfelt ones, like the 1999 TV film starring Patrick Stewart. Of course the visually amazing, such as Disney’s 2009 remake starring Jim Carrey. But here is no better adaption than The Muppet Christmas Carol. ![]() by Robbie Jones Howdy Friends! We’re getting closer and closer to the end of the year, so it would be a good time to reflect on my least favourite films from 2013. Unlike a lot of people, I didn’t see too many stinkers so the list only comes to five. Also unlike a lot of people, After Earth is not on this list, as I had the common sense not to watch it. To be honest though, there were a lot of films that came under fire in 2013. Some that truly deserved it (Grown Ups 2, R.I.P.D, The Big Wedding), some that polarised critics (Only God Forgives, The Counsellor) and then some that just didn’t deserve the hate at all, like Gangster Squad (which, by the way, was awesome). Before I start, let’s throw an honourable (or is it dishonourable in this case?) mention to Warm Bodies, the very slow and unfunny Zom-Com released near the start of the year. Right, let’s get on with it! ![]() by Robbie Jones The year is coming to an end, meaning it’s time for awards. Today, we’re looking at the winners of the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA). The show, hosted by Hobbit James Nesbitt this year, may not be as glitzy as the Oscars or as prestigious as the Baftas but it certainly recognises some true talent, as evident by this year’s winner. ![]() by Robbie Jones Gary Oldman is one of the greatest actors of all time. If there is anyone reading this that does not agree with that statement, I will fight you. That is no lie. But seriously, the man is a legend. Whether it be villainous roles such as True Romance and Leon, or playing the good guy like Gordon in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, the man knows how to light up the screen with is presence. But how would you react if I told you this man has never won an Oscar? No, seriously, I’m not lying. Gary doesn’t have a little golden guy sitting on his shelf and that is an utter disgrace. |
