The world is often cruel to those who are different. Whether the difference comes from a physical trait, a mental capability or general societal standing (to name but three), there has always been a great difficulty visited on those who cannot easily exist as part of "normal" society. Take the subjects of the film White Shadow: albinos. Due to a physical difference beyond their control, people with albinism can find themselves the regular target of discrimination and abuse by those around them. However, in certain parts of East Africa, the cruelty visited upon the members of the region's albino populace is brutal and horrific.

The creator Billy Raftery was a student at the time when he first travelled to Durban to go surfing. When he arrived at the beach he found that it wasn’t the waves that mesmerized him. He was alarmed at the amount of homeless children there were, which inspired him to document them. by Cookie N Screen Coming from a different culture, one may perceive another as something different to what it really is. It’s a common trait of the Western World, drenching a society in stereotypes that we do not understand correctly. Mexico is just one of those that even I have perpetuated labels. Colourful somberos and salsa dancing, chiuauas and drug culture are just a few typecasts that stick in your mind when you hear the words Mexico. But in Gerardo Barroso Alcana and Lisa Tillinger’s stella mini documentary, the lives of the country and the epitome of hard work revolves around a small street: Calle Lopez. by Melissa Haggar If we were to look back on our culture, what would we have to say about it? What would matter to us when everything else was over? Tonight and the People is an infusion of American culture, where stereotypical representations come together in the face of the Apocalypse to reflect on the ideals, dreams, values and politics of their time. by Hayley Charlesworth With his debut feature, director Hong Khaou creates a quiet, stunning vision of love and loss in Lilting. It is a story that explores grief and acceptance in its many forms, crossing cultural and societal boundaries as it does so. by Laura W Jesse Hector – does the name ring a bell? He was the founding member of the bands The Hammersmith Gorillas (also the guitarist) and Crushed Butler, and has become a permanent fixture in the English music press. Jesse Hector basically had it all, without actually really hitting the big time. The documentary, A Message to the World, follows Jesse, now a cleaner who also happens to have a rock and roll career that spans 50 years. I am a fan of documentaries, so was greatly enthusiastic about watching this. by Melissa Haggar What do you get when you cross excessive farce, outlandish stylistic quirks and a strange incorporation of sadomasochism? Well, none other than Tip Top, Serge Bozon’s latest outing. An infusion of a variety of genres, Tip Top combines the classic crime drama/cop thriller with off the cuff humour and adds in a little bit of spice with an overall bizarre look into the private lives of its lead investigators on the case. by Cookie N Screen Ecosexual. Now there is a term that you’ve probably never heard before. Ecosexual. It has other terms, “tree hugger” or “hippy” and those are terms I am almost certain you have thrown around at people who give an ounce or two of care about the environment. Ecosexual is different though. They are people who perpetuate Earth as a lover. No longer is motherhood prime for the globe and she is no longer there to take care of us. Instead, a mistress to us all, providing us with sexy life and seducing us with her foliage. It’s no wonder people feel attracted to her and feel the need to protect her. by Cookie N Screen Growing up, even on this side of the pond, there was a global hero who did so much for the world of sport. His name was Lance Armstrong. You didn’t even have to be a sports fan to know that name; he was the cyclist who conquered several Tour De Frances and campaigned with people against caner to raise funds for numerous amounts of charities. After all, this was the medal winning Lance Armstrong, man who defeated testicular cancer and became a sensation in the biking world. Hell, he even turned up in Dodgeball to deliver a life altering message to Peter. When in actual fact, all along, he was an arsehole. by Liam McMillen Everyone has gotten to that point in life where all they want to do is run. Run as far as they can. Away from everything and on their own. Zoé tries to escape herself. She travels north through bleak landscapes until she gets on a ferryboat, where a mysterious woman suddenly disappears. In the winter coat of a stranger, Zoé reaches the other side of the Channel. |
