The most heart-melting animation I had the pleasure of viewing last summer. And no, I’m not onto Monsters University just yet. There is an unexpected six-minute short film that plays before the film begins; The Blue Umbrella. Directed by Saschka Unseld, a blue umbrella and a red umbrella meet in a crowded New York street in the middle of a rainstorm. Lucky for them, the weather is terrible and the wind blows them towards each other. Unless you’ve seen it, you probably can’t understand what I found so alluring about this short, but the animation is so mesmerising that it ends with you releasing that you’ve just had your heartstrings vigorously tugged by two animated umbrellas.

On this day 10 years ago, we were granted the release of the British comedy-horror Shaun of the Dead. It’s only right to applaud its anniversary after presenting its audience with such entertainment and beyond for a whole decade. So in celebration, lets once again appreciate all the wonderful things that this zombie fantasy still offers even after endless viewings. by Amber Maishment It almost feels odd to try to sell or persuade somebody to watch such a dramatic and traumatic film that is set almost entirely inside a prison. It’s not a story that anybody would particularly rush to see – in fact, on it’s initial release, not many people did go to see it, despite being nominated for many Oscars, including Best Picture. It was only when it was released on home video that sales started to increase. The Shawshank Redemption is a film that needed the powerful word-of-mouth technique, so if by now you still have not seen this incredible movie, drop whatever plans you have tonight and get your hands on it! You will not regret it. by Amber Maishment “You cannot be told what Fight Club is; you have to see it for yourself. But only if you think you’re hard enough.” Fight Club, directed by David Fincher already had an established fan-base before it hit theatres in 1999 due to the cult novel it was adapted from by Chuck Palahniuk. It is very clear from Fincher’s previous work such as Seven (1995), that he has a talented knack for capturing the murkier side of life. He is one of the most alluring visual stylists in cinema who has a very shadowy vision of human nature. These visualizations are portrayed through his narratives which are usually violent and very distinctive; mostly dark, stylish thrillers where every single frame has been calculated to push us closer to the edge as the films progress. Fincher has shown this very effectively in Fight Club, as this movie is no less dark or disturbing than his other work. |
