With the second film adaptation instalment of author Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games releasing on DVD on the 17th March, Olivia Grey has decided to put together a list of the most famous heroines and their best moments
Suzanne Collins’ struck gold when writing Katniss as the heroine of her book. She is all that heroines are; she is intelligent, she is adaptable, and she has a good cause to fight, and therefore audiences have no trouble relating to her. The Hunger Games fandom has spread worldwide since the first movie The Hunger Games released in 2012, directed by Gary Ross, with ‘The Hunger Games’ earning a worldwide total of $691,247,768 at the box office. Katniss is determined to survive, and to protect her younger sister, the adorable Primrose ‘Prim’ Everdeen.
So what other heroines are out there and what makes them great characters like Katniss?
Packed full of action and katana-wielding on Thurman’s part. After being left for dead and pregnant at her own wedding, The Bride only remembers telling the unseen character of Bill that she is carrying his baby moments before he shoots her in the head. She survives this tragedy, and aims to seek Bill out to act over her plans of revenge.
Best moment: Single-handedly eliminating a personal army by the title of Crazy 88’s.
After accidentally wishing away her younger half-brother Toby, Sarah must complete a Labyrinth within thirteen hours otherwise the Goblin King Jareth will keep little Toby with him forever and Sarah won’t see him again.
Best moment: Sarah proves that the King is no match for her by only saying six words. ‘You have no power over me’ is a simple yet satisfying sentence made up of words which do more damage than some of the greatest choreographed fights in film.
Imagine being the personal victim of a terrorist hijacker whose aim is to assassinate the United States Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security, and to do so, he needs your help. Helping the terrorist aptly named Jack Rippner means taking the life of an innocent, while not cooperating with him means that he will kill your doting father. What would you do? Travelling aboard the red eye flight from Texas to Florida, hotel manager Lisa has to make fast decisions and keep calm under the most demanding of situations. True to the heroine format, Lisa fights back and proves that even in the face of terror good can still prevail.
Best moment: Describing what happened to her years ago which left her with a scar on her chest, and then impaling Rippner (Cilian Murphy) with a pen in the throat. Brilliant!
(Also as a side note to this film, there is a mini-heroine in the form of a little girl travelling the red eye flight alone. You’ll know what I mean if you’ve seen it!
A young computer hacker, Lisbeth comes to the aid of journalist Mikael Blomvist who is searching to uncover the mystery of a woman who has been missing for forty years. She is fantastic as she is strong-willed and has her own personality. She isn’t just another face in the crowd, and this makes her a heroine.
Best moment: After being sexually abused by a lawyer, she ensures well-deserved revenge is acted out upon him. To put it lightly, the revenge fits the bill of the crime…(ED: Due to reasons, we wont be showing that moment but meet Lizbeth)
In training since the age of two, Hanna Heller knows how to fight. Her father Erik, an ex-CIA operative from Germany, personally taught her and-to-hand combat and schools her in target shooting with the intention of one day killing senior CIA agent Marissa Wiegler (played by Cate Blanchett). When Weigler tries to track both Hanna and Erik down to eliminate them, Hanna gets to put those skills into practice.
Best moment: Coming face-to-face with Wiegler was a moment of pure tension in film. Ronan and Blanchett at their best.
