I feel honoured to cover The Nightmare Before Christmas as a review for the 20th anniversary of the film. In my eyes, it truly is the best Halloween film around, for both adults and kids alike.

Now I know what you are thinking: adults? Where’s the horror? The blood and guts? The murderous psychopaths, the trick or treating? The masked villains, witches, vampires, mummies, werewolves?

It seems that when people think of Danny Elfman’s work, they go straight to Tim Burton. After all, he has scored all but two of Burton’s movies.

But Elfman’s work goes much beyond the partnership with Burton and some of the most iconic theme songs and scores have been birthed from this musical genius.

Elfman has been one of the masters of the sound of cinema.

Hidden Heroes: Henry Selick

Henry Selick, despite being one of the most prominent stop-motion directors working today, is a name that most won’t know. Not only has he directed some of the most successful stop-motion films of recent years but has been instrumental in keeping the rare and pain staking art form from becoming obsolete. His work ranges from back in the 1980’s when he did work in commercials, moving into short films and eventually directing feature length stop-motion features. He’s since gone on to produce more successful feature length animations. Despite this prestigious body of work his name is sometimes overlooked. Here we look at the history and work of unsung hero Mr Henry Selick.

There are not many things that I would consider getting up at six in the morning on a weekend for. However this weekend I made an exception. Why? Because this week I was going to my very first Comic Con!

It was rather humorous to see the looks on the faces of the public as they were passed by droves of people in costume, half of which I didn’t even recognise. They must have been wondering what on earth they had walked into. But it was a truly awesome sight for my eyes to behold. I’m pretty sure I did say a couple of times ‘I am with my people now’ whilst looking around, wide eyed. There was Doctors to Loki’s, Princess Peach to Princess Bubblegum, and everything in between.

Mask of the Phantasm

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, a 1993 animated film, was the first animated Batman movie. Based in the nineties Batman cartoon universe, the film boasts much of the same cast and crew as the series. This includes the director Bruce Timm, writer Paul Dini, and the voice talents of Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker.

The film follows the story of a new villain known as the Phantasm who is systematically taking out some of Gotham's gangsters. The media and police, sans Commissioner Gordon (Bob Hastings,) blame the murders on Batman. Meanwhile an old flame of Bruce Wayne's, Andrea Beaumont (Dana Delany,) comes back into town bringing up old wounds for him.

Hoo-boy, this one has a reputation, doesn't it? A 3.6 star rating on the IMDb, a 12% score on rating aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and many individual reviews and reaction videos hating on Batman & Robin everywhere else. Those that defend it often do so in a manner that’s half apologetic ("Yeah, I know it's crap, but..."). Even Joel Schumacher himself publicly apologised for the film, and George Clooney said that this was the film that officially killed the Batman franchise. Due to this violently negative response, any and all plans for future Batman projects (such as the proposed Batman Triumphant, in which Scarecrow was to be the new main villain) were instantly cancelled. As far as mainstream cinema goes, only The Phantom Menace can hope to beat the legacy of Batman & Robin. Films cancelled, careers stunted, the Bat-signal decommissioned for almost a full decade… that’s a lot of hate.

Batman (1966)

This may be considered sacrilege, but I’m not really huge on Batman. I’ve read some of the most iconic comics, like The Dark Knight Returns and The Killing Joke, but I’m a Marvel girl through and through. I’ve watched most, if not all, of the films, but I found The Dark Knight Saga enjoyable yet hugely overrated, and my main memories of Batman in the late 80s and early 90s consists entirely of Seal’s Kiss from a Rose. (Maybe I’m due a re-watch of them all.) But there is one piece of Batman media that remains close to my heart, that I can watch over and over again and feel utter joy. That is 60s Batman.

The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises is the latest Batman film and is the last film of The Dark Knight trilogy. The 2012 film was directed by Christopher Nolan and was a highly anticipated movie after the previous outing, The Dark Knight. The last film in the trilogy*-, this movie is one of my favourite Batman films of all time.

The film follows Batman against a new enemy, Bane, a masked and powerful man. After Bane arrives in Gotham with a new terrorist plan to destroy the city, Bruce Wayne must come out of retirement in order to save the city despite them turning against him. With the help of cat burglar Selina Kyle and police officer John Blake, Wayne and Batman must rise as the hero as Bane takes the city by ransom. But has Batman finally met his match and will this new challenge break him once and for all?
