There's been a trend in Hollywood lately where alternative or indie film makers are given the reigns on mega-blockbusters with astronomical budgets. There's been a trend in Hollywood lately where alternative or indie film makers are given the reigns on mega-blockbusters with astronomical budgets. Names like Rian Johnson, Shane Black, Gareth Ewards, Josh Trank and Colin Trevorrow are names that many film fans will know, but lately they'll be know to a larger fanbase because they've either made or are making big franchise movies. Here are the films you should watch before you watch their franchise movie by Liam McMillen Stand By Me is yet another one of the stories made into a movie from the author who has had more stories made into movies than any other author in history, Stephen King. I'd like to argue that this is the definitive Stephen King adaptation. This movie is literally filled with actors who have achieved varying degrees of success over the years. River Phoenix, who was on course to be the greatest actor of all time, is in there. Corey Feldman, one of the biggest child actors of all time, who has grown into an unenviable but visible existence has a great role to play. And, who could forget Kiefer Sutherland, who is the biggest dick of all time? Even John Cusack can be seen in a small role as Gordie's late brother. by Cookie N Screen In 2012, Joss Whedon teamed up with Marvel to deliver us one of the most entertaining pieces of Superhero fare: The Avengers (so strangely named Avengers Assemble in the UK, but we’ll deal with the American prefix). It, following in the vein of the comics, collated some stellar super heroes from their stand-alone movies and forced them to fight against Asguardian Loki and a bunch of superbike-riding aliens. Earning billions and exciting fans everywhere, The Avengers has racked up superb acclaim from the avid to the new, setting an enormous bar for spandex-clad movies after. In short, it was incredible. But with all those superegos sandwiched into a room together to assemble a team like an Ikea tea set, it is hard to pick a favourite. Well, not that hard. It’s Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow. Eli Wallach, one of his generation’s most prolific character actors, appearing in hundreds of film, plays and TV series over the course of a career spanning more than 60 years, has passed away. He died in his Manhattan home at the age of 98, survived by his wife Anne Jackson, their three children and numerous grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of some excellent work, with easily his most famous film role being that of the outlaw Tuco, the “ugly” of Sergio Leone’s spaghetti western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. But he was so much more than that. |
